After a decade as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, he gained fame in the early 1990s for his cover performances in Manhattan's East Village, eventually focusing on his own music. Despite initially resisting offers from record labels and his father's manager, he signed with Columbia, formed a band, and recorded his only studio album, Grace, in 1994.
